Candidate pool for elections to shake up student government

Members of Student Government believe that this year's elections, taking place November 16 and 17 through online voting, will result in a more diverse group to represent the student body. Student government has not been particularly diverse in the past, according to many in the student body.

College gains ownership of former downtown hubcap store

After spending three years negotiating the contract to purchase the former Hubcap and Wheel Store downtown, the college has gained ownership of the building and plans have been made for the space. The building is located at 229 N 4th St, right before the entrance ramp leading to 22 East.

Students debate U.S. intervention in foreign countries

College Democrats, Libertarians and Republicans came together Wednesday to debate United States intervention in foreign countries, ending in a victory for Libertarians, followed by the Republicans, then the Democrats. Each student organization selected a representative to present the party's platform on the issue and to rebut other assertions made throughout the debate.

Apparently, "mum" is the word at Lafayette College. From the silence surrounding the Matthew Smith case to the omission of several incidents that The Lafayette has reported on that never made their way into Public Safety's 2009-10 annual security report due to a lack of substantial information, it's clear that no one is talking.

The 2009-2010 Annual Security Report was recently released online to the Lafayette community. Part II offenses, which include most liquor violations, drug possession and sexual offenses, saw the most increases, moving from 299 violations in 2007 to 386 in 2008.

More busts and citations reflection on liquor board

According to the Commonwealth Foundation, a non-profit research group, Pennsylvania's liquor control system does not reduce underage drinking by a significant amount. By comparing states with different degrees of privatization, the report deduces that there is no association between increased consumption or alcohol-related traffic fatalities and privatization of alcohol in the 48 of the states examined.
