Devin Smith finished her award-winning freshman track season with a second place finish in the Patriot League Championship this past weekend. Smith ran the 400-meter dash in 55.89 seconds, less than a second behind Patriot League champion Jennifer Zymet, a Bucknell junior.
It has been an incredible winter and spring season for Smith, who grew up in Andover, NJ and attended Pope John XXIII High School. She won three Patriot League Rookie of the Week awards during the indoor season and was part of the 4x400m relay that set the sixth fastest time in school history. Smith, Erin Keen ‘16, Chelsea Marone ‘13 and Megan Matusky ‘13, ran 3:54.19 in the Pennsylvania heat of the Armory Invitational in New York City.
At the women’s ECAC Championship in Boston on March 3, Smith set the school record in the women’s 400m dash with a time of 55.58 seconds. Smith was one of four Lafayette runners invited to the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton University. She finished first in the 200m race in 26.10.
Interestingly enough, her high school coach Brian Corcoran ‘93 is the Lafayette school record-holder in the outdoor 1500m.
For her accomplishments, Smith was voted nearly unanimously as the inaugural ALSA Female Rookie of the Year.
Only one vote was used on an athlete other than Smith: swimmer Jackie Andrews ‘16.
